Can these unlikely enemies fight their feelings while fighting for a spot on the team, or will they break all the rules for love?

A sweet stand-alone high school sports romance.
Check out all the books in The Trouble with Tomboy series for the full reading experience.

Playing the Enemy – by Maggie Dallen (Book 1)
Playing to Win – by Stephanie Street (Book 2)
Playing the Field – by Christina Benjamin (Book 3)

Tiaras, tutus, and tomboys! The tomboys were cemented during a three-week summer sports camp. She beautiful young women. Three incredible athletes. Three life-long friends, Hannah, Jordan, and Alex, who understand a girl can be an athlete and an athlete can be a girl and just how difficult it is to be both. Alex is the youngest child, the only female in her family. Her father was a pro baseball player. Her oldest brother is a pro. Her two other brothers will be after college. All Alex wants is to be given the same opportunity to play. When her family moves to a town without a girl's softball team, she tries out for a spot on the high school baseball team. To say she's not welcome is an understatement. The school doesn't want her to upset the status quo. The team doesn't want to be the freak-show with a girl on the field. And star player, Grant King doesn't want the competition for his spot, especially from his dream girl. Too bad, the Trojan Princess has arrived, ready to take the field. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. Girl Power and Play Like a Girl made into a fun story. Alex is a fantastic character. I loved her confidence. I loved her insecurities. I loved her talent and determination. She came across as a completely believable young woman. She knew what she wanted and never doubted her abilities but she still had those story thoughts about being a disappointment. Who can't relate? Grant wasn't as easy to love but his circumstances brought out the worst in him at times. His desire for security, safety, acceptance, and a chance at life made him desperate for success and the escape it would allow him. It was such a paradox to think that, on the one hand, he was King of the school Every girl wanting him, every guy admiring him. But on the other, he felt looked down upon, judged. It was so easy to see that he was a good guy acting badly. It was equally easy to see, he and Alex were inevitable. The side character students were great. I loved Lucas, Casey, and the Tomboys. I LOVED the Trojan Tattler! I loved the tiaras and tutus. I would have liked more of David and Will Prince. Really that's my only complaint about this story. I would have liked more. A longer, more in-depth novel but I understand. Now I need to check out the other books in this series.Alex’s story The nice thing about this series is that they can be read independently and in any order or each one can be read as a stand-alone. Each book starts off with the same introduction, giving the reader the backstory, and then each book branches off to highlight the individual girls’ stories. It’s quite cleverly done. The first two books in the series are very similar in style and make a seamless transition from book one to book two. I found this author’s style to be quite different. A little bit edgier, a little bit more mature, albeit just as clean as the previous two. They are all fast-paced and the target audience is teens. There is no swearing in any of the books and no sex. This is Alex’s story, written in alternating points of view with the main male character, Grant.-‘By the time I finished my chocolate milkshake I think I had my first full blown crush and I didn’t regret a minute of it. I was already drafting my email to Jordan and Hannah in my head.’-Captivating, Emotional, & Hilarious!!! What a sensational young adult romantic story with so much heart and laughter. Alex is a softball player and transfers to a new school with no softball team. So what's a softball player to do? Join the boys baseball team. Grant is popular, handsome, and a talented baseball player. Sparks fly and tensions run high when not only is there attraction to contend with but also a competition for a starting position. Christina Benjamin creates fantastic stories about young adults overcoming adversity and insecurities and heartache born from the hurtful mistakes of those that are supposed to love and protect you but overcoming one's own fears of failure and unworthiness. Playing the Field is witty banter, laughter, heartache, bullies, pranks, secrets, fear, insecurities, healing, faith, friendship, passionate kisses, and love. I really loved this book and can't wait to read more from Christina Benjamin. This is a captivating, laugh out loud must read that readers won't want to put down and characters they will fall in love with.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Underland Free Pdf

ISBN: 0393242145
Title: Underland Pdf A Deep Time Journey
Author: Robert Macfarlane
Published Date: 2019
Page: 384

An Amazon Best Book of June 2019: Heads-up to your inner Gilgamesh: "The way into the underland is through the riven trunk of an old ash tree." Starting with that sentence, Robert Macfarlane begins an exploration of the world beneath our feet. Where his earlier book The Old Ways explored landscape and its effects on human experience, Underland dives into catacombs, caves, nuclear waste facilities, and the land beneath Greenland's shrinking ice cap to delve into the darker recesses of our imaginations, a place where artists, adventurers, and criminals have traveled, willingly and otherwise. Expanding his journey into the realm of "deep time"—a parallel expanse of past and future almost unimaginable to human intellect, but also irresistible to contemplate—Macfarlane takes us from the moment of creation into a post-human future, one that might be better off without us. Add its stunning jacket by Stanley Donwood (who creates Radiohead album covers in his spare hours), Underland is a one-of-a-kind book, deeply thoughtful, richly written, and infinitely rewarding. —Jon Foro, Amazon Book Review “Mesmerizing…Underland is a portal of light in dark times.” - Terry Tempest Williams, New York Times Book Review“An excellent book―fearless and subtle, empathic and strange.” - Dwight Garner, The New York Times“Reading Macfarlane connects us to dazzling new worlds. It's a connection that brings, more than anything else, joy.” - Barbara J. King, NPR“Incantatory…A worthy companion to the historian Simon Schama’s monumental Landscape and Memory.” - Marcia Bjornerud, Wall Street Journal“Brilliant.” - Peter Fish, San Francisco Chronicle“Exquisite. ” - Ryan J. Haupt, Science“Quietly prophetic. ” - Jedediah Purdy, Atlantic“Profound in every sense of the word.” - Richard Powers“Underland is a devastating act of witness and a clear, cogent, lyrical examination of the darknesses invisible beneath our feet.” - Lauren Groff“Underland is a profound reckoning with humankind’s self-imperiled position in nature’s eternal order. At once thrilling and soulful, raw and erudite, it is a book of revelations.” - Philip Gourevitch

National Bestseller

From the best-selling, award-winning author of Landmarks and The Old Ways, a haunting voyage into the planet’s past and future.

Hailed as "the great nature writer of this generation" (Wall Street Journal), Robert Macfarlane is the celebrated author of books about the intersections of the human and the natural realms. In Underland, he delivers his masterpiece: an epic exploration of the Earth’s underworlds as they exist in myth, literature, memory, and the land itself.

In this highly anticipated sequel to his international bestseller The Old Ways, Macfarlane takes us on an extraordinary journey into our relationship with darkness, burial, and what lies beneath the surface of both place and mind. Traveling through “deep time”―the dizzying expanses of geologic time that stretch away from the present―he moves from the birth of the universe to a post-human future, from the prehistoric art of Norwegian sea caves to the blue depths of the Greenland ice cap, from Bronze Age funeral chambers to the catacomb labyrinth below Paris, and from the underground fungal networks through which trees communicate to a deep-sunk “hiding place” where nuclear waste will be stored for 100,000 years to come. Woven through Macfarlane’s own travels are the unforgettable stories of descents into the underland made across history by explorers, artists, cavers, divers, mourners, dreamers, and murderers, all of whom have been drawn for different reasons to seek what Cormac McCarthy calls “the awful darkness within the world.”

Global in its geography and written with great lyricism and power, Underland speaks powerfully to our present moment. Taking a deep-time view of our planet, Macfarlane here asks a vital and unsettling question: “Are we being good ancestors to the future Earth?” Underland marks a new turn in Macfarlane’s long-term mapping of the relations of landscape and the human heart. From its remarkable opening pages to its deeply moving conclusion, it is a journey into wonder, loss, fear, and hope. At once ancient and urgent, this is a book that will change the way you see the world.

24 illustrations

A Thought-Provoking Gem of a Book Robert Macfarlane is a master of rich and vivid prose. In this book, he examines the world beneath the ground and explores the idea of "deep time" - geologic time, in which humans are barely a blip on the screen. He takes us along on explorations of places under the earth that most of us will never experience. Macfarlane examines the ways in which humans have viewed and utilized the underground from the earliest handprints in a cave to the current burying of nuclear waste. The book is filled with references to earth sciences, philosophy, mythology, science writers and poets, and provides thought-provoking reflection and cautionary tale. It can be enjoyed on many levels - for its adventure, its science and for the wonderful prose. This is not a book that you can blow through in a day. This is a volume to read slowly, holistically and to savor for its intertwining themes. Doing so will change your perspective of what lies beneath.Great Book! Great book, as usual!Prepare to have your perspective of the planet altered forever This book has fundamentally shifted the way I view my surroundings. Its claim as a “deep time journey” is spot on as I continually felt the experience of connection to people who existed thousands of years earlier. The final page of this book made me weep as a mother and as a human. Beautiful. MacFarlane’s ability to join things as disparate as the catacombs of Paris and the caves of Norway is an example of his solid connection to human spirituality. He is a seeker, and I’m grateful that he has shared such profound journeys.

Highly recommend to parents with young children with Autism! An amazing resource!! Every parent who has a young child with autism needs this! I practiced ABA using the early start Denver model by sally rogers and highly recommend this book to parents! It helps promoting play skills, communication, and ways for parents to connect with their children!Invaluable resource in a sea of information I was just saying, why isn't there a handbook that comes with a diagnosis? This is about as close as it gets. But my GOSH it chaps my ass when authors of parenting books always assume the parents are married. An entire section on taking care of your spouse and nill on handling the news with your ex-spouse, ex-S.O. or co-parent - 32% of families do not have married parents... it seems like something small to pick at but I'm hoping they see this and catch up to the times so everyone feels included. My son's dad and I have therapists to help us cope, but most people aren't so fortunate and need to hear it in places like this.A MUST READ! A great first read for any parent raising a child with language delay and challenges with engagement and joint attention. This is both PRACTICAL and INFORMATIVE. Not only will you learn a lot but you will also be given specific tasks and measures to move you and your child forward to better communication and function.

The Distance Between Us Free Pdf

ISBN: 1451661789
Title: The Distance Between Us Pdf A Memoir

One of the Best Adult Books 4 Teens 2012 (School Library Journal)One the 15 Best Books of 2012 (The Christian Science Monitor )“In this poignant memoir about her childhood in Mexico, Reyna Grande skillfully depicts another side of the immigrant experience—the hardships and heartbreaks of the children who are left behind. Through her brutally honest firsthand account of growing up in Mexico without her parents, Grande sheds light on the often overlooked consequence of immigration—the disintegration of a family.” (Sonia Nazario, Pulitzer Prize winner, and author of Enrique's Journey)Award-winning novelist (Across a Hundred Mountains) Grande captivates and inspires in her memoir. Raised in Mexico in brutal poverty during the 1980s, four-year-old Grande and her two siblings lived with their cruel grandmother after both parents departed for the U.S. in search of work. Grande deftly evokes the searing sense of heartache and confusion created by their parents’ departure. Eight years later her father returned and reluctantly agreed to take his children to the States. Yet life on the other side of the border was not what Grande imagined: her father’s new girlfriend’s indifference to the three children becomes more than apparent. Though Grande’s father continually stressed the importance of his children obtaining an education, his drinking resulted in violence, abuse, and family chaos. Surrounded by family turmoil, Grande discovered a love of writing and found solace in library books, and she eventually graduated from high school and went on to become the first person in her family to graduate from college. Tracing the complex and tattered relationships binding the family together, especially the bond she shared with her older sister, the author intimately probes her family’s history for clues to its disintegration. Recounting her story without self-pity, she gracefully chronicles the painful results of a family shattered by repeated separations and traumas (Aug.)   (Publishers Weekly: Starred Review)“A brutally honest book…akin to being the “Angela’s Ashes” of the modern Mexican immigrant experience.” (LA Times)“Reyna Grande is a fierce, smart, shimmering light of a writer with an important story to tell.” (Cheryl Strayed Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail)“I’ve been waiting for this book for decades. The American story of the new millennium is the story of the Latino immigrant, yet how often has the story been told by the immigrant herself? What makes Grande’s beautiful memoir all the more extraordinary is that, through this hero’s journey, she speaks for millions of immigrants whose voices have gone unheard.” (Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street)“The sadness at the heart of Grande’s story is unrelenting; this is the opposite of a light summer read. But that’s OK, because . . . this book should have a long shelf life.” (Slate)“A timely and a vivid example of how poverty and immigration can destroy a family.” (The Daily Beast)“Grande consistently displays a fierce willingness to ask tough questions, accept startling answers, and candidly render emotional and physical violence.” (Kirkus Reviews) Reyna Grande is an award-winning author, motivational speaker, and writing teacher. As a girl, she crossed the US–Mexico border to join her family in Los Angeles, a harrowing journey chronicled in The Distance Between Us, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist that has been adopted as the common read selection by over twenty schools and colleges and fourteen cities across the country. Her other books include the novels Across a Hundred Mountains, winner of a 2007 American Book Award, and Dancing with Butterflies, and The Distance Between Us, Young Reader’s Version. She lives in Woodland, CA with her husband and two children. Visit ReynaGrande.com.

“In this poignant memoir about her childhood in Mexico, Reyna Grande skillfully depicts another side of the immigrant experience—the hardships and heartbreaks of the children who are left behind.” —Sonia Nazario, Pulitzer Prize winner, and author of Enrique's Journey

Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this “compelling . . . unvarnished, resonant” (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to “El Otro Lado” (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to “El Otro Lado” to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father.

Funny, heartbreaking, and lyrical, The Distance Between Us poignantly captures the confusion and contradictions of childhood, reminding us that the joys and sorrows we experience are imprinted on the heart forever, calling out to us of those places we first called home.

Also available in Spanish as La distancia entre nosotros.

A young girl and her family cross the border A very moving story revealing the tragedy and triumph of coming to America from Mexico and succeeding. Anyone who has thought about building a wall to keep immigrants out of the US, needs to read this book. Ms. Grande writes about her experiences of and her triumph over abuse, neglect and abandonment. She tells her life story in a clear and efficient manner without rhetoric. She is so efficient in her storytelling that it belies the extent of the pain and anguish she and her beloved sisters and brother must have endured. I felt like she was trying to protect the reader from the true horror of her experience.A book for our times -- a "must-read" for all This spring, I've read the texts from my friend's Albion College course on the Mexican-American Immigrant Experience. I just finished the last book, The Distance Between Us, by Reyna Grande. Grande's memoir of her childhood is powerful: her Mexican parents came (illegally) to "El Otro Lado" (The Other Side), Los Angeles, to find work, and left her and her siblings with their abusive grandmother. Later, Reyna and siblings ran across the border to join their father, and started school here, not knowing a word of English. (Reyna was the first of her family to graduate from college.) This book is painful, powerful, well-written -- difficult to read at times, but I couldn't put it down. Especially at this time of "Build The Wall", this book needs to be read. Strongly recommend!Beautifully Written, Hit Close to Home I will admit, I did not read any reviews prior to purchasing this book. Actually, I only read a few sentences of the summary before deciding to purchase it. This book is very well written, Grande is a wonderful author and I am excited to read more from her. Definitely reccommend, not only to other Mexican Americans or Latinos but to anyone who is willing to open up their ears and hearts to the struggles of those coming to the U.S. in search for a better future. Her story is like many others, I hope this book is read by many who are blind to the reality of what the American Dream is for Mexican Immigrants. We don't come to this country to take, we come to give and to belong.(Spoiler Alert) I had no idea her journey would lead her from her small town in Mexico to LA then to Santa Cruz, CA. I was so happy to read that her destiny lead her to life 15 minutes from my home town and her sister Betty would end up in Watsonville, CA which is my hometown in the USA.My parents, like hers, came from a very poor area of Mexico, they left in search for a better future to offer their future children. My siblings were taken back to my parent's hometown after the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989. They too had to live with grandparents and feel like orphans for almost a year. Her story brought tears to my eyes time and time again.
